Description

Introduces some of the basics of modern Japanese through listening, speaking, and reading activities. Covers five broad themes including introducing oneself, talking about university experiences, housing, Japanese geography, and daily routines. Hiragana and katakana are also introduced. Communicating in socio-culturally appropriate ways are stressed throughout the course.

Learning Outcomes

Introduce and talk about oneself in a simple manner
Develop and sustain a simple conversation with native speakers of Japanese when talking about themselves, their lives, etc
Read and write hiragana, katakana, and about 20 kanji fluently
Understand problems of intercultural interaction with Japanese nationals.

Assessment

Interaction tests - 20%
Dictation - 30%
Listening tests - 10%
Homework - 10%
Active class participation - 10%
Final exam - 20%
