Description


Students wishing to work in an area not covered by an existing course may apply to the School to take a reading option. Not more than one such course may be counted towards a degree. Approval of a program for a reading option will depend on its suitability, and the availability of a staff member to undertake supervision.

Note: Permission for enrolment in the reading option must be obtained from the Head of School.


Learning Outcomes


In this course students will:
  • Develop in-depth understanding of some area of history and philosophy of science, chosen in consultation with the instructor, through careful examination of up-to-date research literature relating to it
  • Gain appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of different evidence-acquiring and interpretive strategies used by historians and/or philosophers of science, and in so doing develop skills critically to assess historical and philosophical about science.

  • Major research essay (up to 10000 words) - 70%
  • Assignment - 30%
