Description

Traces the rise of Rome from a small, unimportant city-state to the largest power in the Mediterranean world. Explores the political, social, and cultural development of Roman civilisation from the eighth century to the end of the Middle Republican period of 133 BCE. Examines how Rome as a state and as a people dealt with both internal conflict and external adversities. Asks how Rome overcame many of these problems and yet its pluralistic system of governance and of social organisation eventually started to fracture.
