Description Examines and assesses the most significant upheavals of the turbulent decades between the late-18th century and the mid-19th century. Topics may include: the French Revolution, Napoleonic Europe, innovations in agriculture, industry and communications, social transformations (population growth, urbanisation, ideas about 'classes'), cultural production (Romanticism, the periodical press), the expansion of state power, and conflicts over political representation (conservatism, nationalism, socialism, feminism).
Learning Outcomes At the completion of the course students will develop an understanding of the period from the late eighteenth century until the mid-nineteenth century including the French Revolution and its aftermath; political and cultural developments and social and economic changes.
