Description

Mythical heroes and heroines in Greek tragedy are treated as human archetypes which are demythologised and brought down to earth. The tragedies generate universal truths and illuminate aspects of the human condition. Examines gender issues in five tragedies and gives students the opportunity to observe the consistency with which basic attitudes of men and women have endured through the centuries in western society.


Learning Outcomes

On completing this course, students should:
  • Develop an understanding of the society of Classical Greece and how it shaped aspects of basic attitudes of men and women in the West which have remained unaffected by time
  • Develop an ability to think analytically and creatively and express ideas effectively in written form and orally
  • Possess an understanding of social, ethical and cultural context.

  • End of session test - 20%
