Description

Examines imaginative representations of East European peoples through history, drawing on evidence from visual images, travel writing, and chronicles. Clarifies the connections between history, mythology, demonisation and romanticism in West European depictions of "the East", and Eastern self-representation.


Learning Outcomes

Students will gain a comprehensive knowledge of significant issues and events in East European history and the history of East-West relations, particularly of the 19th and 20th century and will gain or expand on an appreciation and ability to apply both long-established and cutting-edge theoretical approaches to themes such as identity, memory, gender, representation and collectivity in history/historical discourse.
