Description

Current research on appropriate curriculum design, teaching methodologies and program development for gifted and talented children. Evaluation of program models and enrichment strategies currently used in Australia and internationally. Development of differentiated curricula for use with academically gifted students in the regular classroom or in special settings. Examines research on the effectiveness of in-class enrichment, acceleration and various forms of ability, achievement and interest grouping with particular attention to the effects of these strategies on the students' academic and social development.


Learning Outcomes

By the completion of this course students should have developed sophisticated understandings of relevant aspects of differentiated curriculum and instruction for gifted learners, and be able to apply these understandings to:
  • Explain the rationale for gifted education in terms of addressing the identified needs of gifted students
  • Apply a selection of differentiated curriculum and instructional options that are appropriate for use with gifted students
  • Integrate curriculum approaches to implement content, process and product modifications to build a comprehensive independent learning experience for a gifted student
  • Understand the place of ability grouping and acceleration in the provision of appropriate options for some gifted students.

Assessment

  • Four assessment tasks - 40%
  • In-class test - 20%
  • Essay (2000 words) - 40%
