Description

Investigates schools as an important part of society in terms of how they interact with and respond to cultural, political, economic and other factors in society. Introduces students to relationships between education and Australian society by focusing on the nature and purpose of education in Australian society, winners and losers in education and the current directions in education. Students investigate the above through a small collaborative research project.


Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Describe the history and structure of Australian schooling
  • Describe the goals of Australian schools and explain the contradictory and conflicting nature of these goals
  • Explain the relationship between family background factors and educational outcomes of students
  • Analyse the relationship in differences between schools and educational outcomes of students
  • Discuss the relationship between within school differences and educational outcomes of students
  • Explain how peer group differences influence educational outcomes of students
  • Develop a coherent view of the sociological factors influencing educational outcomes of students.

Assessment

  • Examination - 50%
