Description

Introduces the key concepts and current debates in criminology. Covers basic issues such as the definition, measurement, and explanations of crime, societal reactions to crime, the treatment of offenders, the role of research, and the influence of criminology on public policy.


Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
  • Outline the scope, aims and emergence of criminology as a discipline
  • Identify key players, themes and debates in the criminal justice arena
  • Describe a variety of ways to define, measure and explain crime and the treatment of offenders
  • Understand the role of criminological research in influencing public policy
  • Understand and use basic terminology common to the criminological field
  • Appreciate the role of critical analysis in understanding social issues and make basic critical analyses of key criminological perspectives and debates
  • Critically appraise current methods of crime control.

  • Essay - 40%
