Description

An examination of racial, ethnic and social issues surrounding migration to Australia. Topics include an ecologically sustainable population; globalisation and international migration flows; brain drain to and from Australia; multiculturalism; criteria in determining migration policy; settlement issues; skilled migrants; refugees, international aid and social justice; identity, ethnicity and community.


Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • Describe, analyse and discuss some issues and policies concerning population/migration/sustainability
  • Locate relevant academic/popular/government information
  • Write in three different genres
  • Develop and operationalise a research question.

Assessment

  • Lecture essay (1200-1500 words) - 40%
  • Policy report (1200-1500 words) - 40%
  • Tutorial reflection paper (1000 words) - 20% or
  • Online tutorial participation - 20%
