Description

Investigates ethical issues in the production and reception of cultural works, including live performance, film and television programs, literature, popular music, advertising and the internet. Particular topics to be addressed include the moral responsibilities of production companies and media organisations, and the function and impact of regulation and legislation.

Note: Offered jointly by the Schools of English and Media, Film and Theatre.


Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
  • Identify key issues connected with censorship, self-censorship and social responsibility
  • Engage critically with these issues in relation to specific cases or problems, in a range of oral and written modes.

Assessment

  • Tutorial participation - 20%
  • Minor assignment (600-800 words, week 5) - 10%
  • Major assignment (1500-2000 words, week 11) - 35%
  • Examination - 35%
Note: Satisfactory completion of each form of assessment is a course requirement.
