Overview

The School of Law was founded in 1971. From its inception, it began a new tradition of teaching in Australia: interactive teaching and learning in small groups. This mode has since become a model in other law faculties as well. We believe that teaching in small groups of around 40 students stimulates the educational process. The result is a more robust and sharpened learning environment that helps students to develop superior powers of legal analysis.

The School of Law offers programs in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. At the undergraduate level, there are several combined degree programs.

For graduates, there is a three year full time Postgraduate program leading to the degree of Juris Doctor or a six year part time program leading to the degree of Bachelor of Laws.

At the postgraduate level, several programs of study are offered: Master of Laws (LLM); Graduate Diploma in Law (Grad Dip Law); Master of Legal Studies (MLS); a Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies (Grad Dip Leg Studs); Master of Law and Management (MLM), offered jointly with the Australian School of Business; Master of International Law and International Relations (MILIR); Graduate Diploma in International Law and International Relations (GDILIR); a combined Master of Business Administration and Master of Laws (MBA/LLM) offered jointly with the Australian School of Business; Master of Human Rights Law and Policy (MHRL&P) and Graduate Diploma in Human Rights Law and Policy (Grad.Dip.HRL&P). The UNSW Law Faculty also offers three research degrees under the supervision of leading scholars: the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), the Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) and the Master of Laws (LLM).
