English

Description

The discipline of English has a central place in the contemporary Humanities. It involves the rigorous study of literary texts in English in a variety of genres from different cultural contexts and historical periods. The study of English fosters pleasure in reading and a commitment to good writing, both creative and academic. Studying English develops and consolidates an understanding of the complex nature of literary languages and the ability to examine and apply a variety of critical and theoretical approaches to literary and cultural texts. Through the progressive stages of an English major, these skills are developed with an increasing degree of sophistication, self-directed learning and self-reflection.
