Stream Outline

The PhD is a research-only degree designed for students who wish to complete a full-length work in their chosen genre of creative writing, with a view to submitting their manuscript to publishers for consideration. Candidature typically lasts three to four years full-time, during which students produce a thesis comprised of two separate but related parts: a Creative Work of 50-70,000 words; and an accompanying Critical Component of 30-50,000 words which demonstrates a scholarly engagement with an area of research relevant to the Creative Work.

The PhD is most appropriate for students who wish to contribute to contemporary literature in a significant, innovative fashion, who are keen to reflect critically on the aesthetic, cultural and ethical ramifications of their craft-based decisions during the process of writing, and who also have an interest in the literary tradition, genre and critical context in which their work is being produced. The PhD is an essential requirement for any writer wishing to pursue an academic career in Creative Writing.
