Program Description
The MBL may be undertaken full-time over 1 academic year or on a part-time basis. The MBL is comprised of 8 courses. All students are required to undertake three compulsory courses and five electives.
The MBL provides graduates with access to a range of business law subjects that allows for a program that can be tailored to the graduates needs. Graduates may complete a generalist degree or specialise in one of the following areas:
- Corporate and Commercial Law
- Corporate, Commercial and Taxation Law
- Taxation Law
- International Business and Economic Law
- Innovation Law
- Media and Technology Law
Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
- To provide non-lawyers with a core understanding of legal issues relevant to business
- To combine the course offerings from UNSW Law and the School of Taxation and Business Law to provide a range of electives and majors that allow students to tailor the degree to their own needs and interests
- To facilitate understanding of the inter-relationship between law and business including the effects of globalisation, international law, technological developments and regulation
- To facilitate the acquisition of skills in the areas of legal research, writing, regulatory compliance and dispute resolution
Program Structure
The MBL has three compulsory courses:
- TABL5511 Legal Foundations of Business (6 UOC)
- TABL5541 Corporations and Business Associations Law (6 UOC)
- LAWS8072 Legal Concepts, Research (6 UOC).
- A minimum of 2 of the 8 courses must be taken from an approved list of courses that contain a substantial research-based assessment component from the Research -Course Based List. The requirement to take two courses from the Research-Based Course List can, in the alternative, be satisfied if the student takes LAWS8423 Research Thesis: 6 uoc.

A student may seek authorisation from the program Director/s or the Coordinator of Postgraduate Education to undertake a Postgraduate course not listed above.
Academic Rules
Qualifications
(2) A candidate for the degree shall have been awarded an appropriate non-law Bachelor degree from UNSW Australia or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution with a minimum of two years' relevant professional experience.

Enrolment and Progression
- An application to enrol as a candidate for the degree shall be lodged online on the UNSW website, by the advertised due date.
A candidate for the degree shall be required to undertake a program of formal study as set out in the program requirements for the Master of Business Law degree.
No candidate shall be awarded the degree until the lapse of two academic semesters from the date of enrolment in the case of a full-time candidate or three semesters in the case of a part-time candidate. The maximum period of candidature shall be four academic semesters from the date of enrolment for a full-time candidate and eight semesters for a part-time candidate. In special cases an extension of these times may be granted by the Committee. The progress of a candidate shall be reviewed at least once annually by the Committee and as a result of the review the Committee may cancel enrolment or take such other action, as it considers appropriate.
