Program Description

The Graduate Diploma in Aviation Management (GradDipAvMgmt) is designed for students who do not hold a University degree but have at least 1 year of relevant industry experience. It is also a pathway for those without a first degree to gain an opportunity to study the Master of Aviation Management. The program is developed with industry input and aims to provide managers and professionals with the skills and knowledge to be effective in a contemporary Aviation environment.

The GradDipAvMgmt is offered entirely through distance education. The online courses are delivered through a secure learning and teaching website. Students do not need to attend any on-campus activities.

The program is 48 units of credit (or 1 year full-time equivalent) and can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. Students with appropriate education and/or professional experience may be eligible for advanced standing and may then complete the degree in less time. Students with full-time employment are recommended to undertake a part-time study load.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

  • Graduates will be equipped with a breadth and depth of generic and disciplinary knowledge and skills which can be applied to a range of complex contexts;
  • Graduates will have developed an understanding of enquiry-based learning and demonstrate analytical skills;
  • Graduates will have developed an advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills in the management context in the aviation industry;
  • Graduates will have an awareness of contemporary issues within the aviation industry.

Program Structure

Students in the GradDip AvMgmt are required to complete a total of 48 UoC selected from the following list of electives:

Academic Rules

  1. The minimum UoC required for the program is 48 UoC.
  2. Students who receive advanced standing or credit transfer must still complete a minimum of 24 UoC at UNSW from the list of approved electives.
  3. Students who have completed 24 UoC of the program (excluding credit received from advanced standing or credit transfer) may be eligible to transfer to program 7449 Graduate Certificate in Aviation Management, and graduate with that qualification.

Articulation Rules

Students who successfully complete 48 UoC of the Graduate Diploma in Aviation Management with a Credit average (≥65%) may articulate into the Master of Aviation Management. Students must then complete an additional 48 UoC for the Master of Aviation Management and meet all other program requirements.

Students who successfully complete 48UoC of the Graduate Diploma in Aviation Management with a less than credit average ( < 65%) must graduate from the program. If they wish to pursue the Master of Aviation Management they are eligible for admission after undertaking a further year’s industry experience. In this case they will be credited with 48 UoC advanced standing towards their Masters degree.

Admission Requirements

The minimum entry requirement to the Graduate Diploma in Aviation Management is at least 1 year of relevant industry experience*.

There are three entry groups to the GradDip AvMgmt. The entry groups are determined by the applicant's years of industry experience. Each entry group offers different amounts of advanced standing and therefore the total UoC to complete at UNSW is different for each group. Please refer to the table below:

  • Advanced flying training (e.g. any holder of Command Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot Licence or Air Transport Pilot Licence)

  • Air traffic controller
  • Aviation legal practitioner
  • Airline captain, first officer, second officer or line pilot
  • Business strategy analyst
  • Defence force personnel
  • Flying instructor

  • Licence aircraft maintenance engineer, aircraft technician

Applicants with other relevant qualifications and experience not listed may apply for admission to this program as follows. This is in accordance with UNSW Policy and Procedure on Recognition Of Prior Learning. Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have achieved the same knowledge and skills (learning outcomes) through their formal or informal learning as the qualifications listed for entry for this program. This may be evidenced by qualification certificates, records of assessment activities relating to course or program learning outcomes, examples of experience from the workplace, community, or other context which demonstrate relevant skills, knowledge or competencies, membership (or eligibility for membership) of professional organisations which require attainment of certain qualifications, or testimonials of skills, knowledge or competencies from workplace supervisors. Any relevant documentation should be attached to the application and will be considered by the Academic Coordinator for the Program.

Resources Required by Students

This program is delivered by distance education using Moodle. It is essential that all students have regular access to email as well as the Internet to enable access to course notes, latest news, student online accounts and administration matters. It is desirable that applicants also have access to a computer with standard programs such as MS Excel, MS Word and Acrobat Reader.
