Program Description

The Master of Educational Leadership degree by coursework (program 8960, stream code EDSTOS8960) is designed to provide aspiring and current educational leaders with an understanding of recent developments in theory, research and practice in educational leadership in order to equip them to lead educational organisations.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

At the end of the program, students should have acquired all of the following graduate attributes:
  1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the field of educational leadership, and the ability to synthesize and apply disciplinary principles and practices to new or complex environments.
  2. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of research-based learning and the ability to plan, analyse, present implement and evaluate complex activities that contribute to advanced professional practice and/or intellectual scholarship in education.
  3. Demonstrate advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  4. Communicate effectively to a range of audiences, and be capable of independent and collaborative enquiry and team-based leadership.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of international perspectives relevant to the educational field.
  6. Demonstrate an advanced capacity to recognise and negotiate the complex and often contested values and ethical practices that underlie education.

Program Structure

In the Master of Educational Leadership (program 8960, plan code EDSTOS8960) students undertake eight courses (48UOC). Students complete two core courses (12UOC) and six elective courses (36 UOC), with a minimum of four electives to be chosen from Educational Leadership electives. The remaining two courses are selected from any Master of Education electives, including those in educational leadership.

ARTS5503 Academic Writing (6 UOC)

Entry Requirements

A recognised Bachelor degree and a postgraduate teaching qualification (e.g. Graduate Diploma of Education or Master of Teaching)

OR

A four year pre-service teacher education qualification, including professional experience, equivalent to the qualifications required for Graduate teacher status in NSW.

Academic Rules

To qualify for the award of the degree, a student must:
  1. Enrol in the Master of Educational Leadership and complete 48 UOC;
  2. Complete 12 UOC of core courses
  3. Complete 36 UOC of prescribed electives

Articulation

The Master of Educational Leadership forms part of an approved sequence of articulated programs comprising the Graduate Certificate and Masters degree in the same area of specialisation. A postgraduate student enrolled in an articulated program may progress from Graduate Certificate to Masters level with full credit for courses completed in the earlier program in the sequence.
