Program Description

This new program structure will commence from Semester 2 2015. Current Students please refer to 2014 Handbook record.

Program Summary
Each year the nation commits more than half of its capital outlays to land development, building and infrastructure. The property industry is rapidly moving from essentially responding to client requirements for structures to providing business solutions and sustainable communities. This makes property a key sector of the economy. The Master of Property and Development (MPD) program offered at UNSW is designed to meet the needs of those who wish to work at the cutting edge of these changes, and assemble a suite of courses that stretch their imaginations and capabilities.

In a collaborative arrangement between Faculty of Built Environment, peak industry associations, and other faculties, UNSW offers the MPD program. The program should appeal to people seeking careers in development, investment and management of property and infrastructure and the professions that serve this industry. It also provides valuable education to those seeking a broader base to careers in architecture and landscape architecture, construction, engineering, urban planning and law.

Career Opportunities and Accreditation
Graduates from this program have an opportunity to engage in the property profession and industry in a wide range of activities, such as valuation, property development, property analysis, property finance, property agency, property management, and asset and facilities management. The program also provides for graduates to become members of professional institutions such, as the Australian Property Institute (API) subject to the relevant institutions designated practical experience requirements.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Master of Property and Development program provides the opportunity for students to understand the principles of property development and investment and applies them across different phases of the property development and investment cycle to achieve successful outcomes in terms of financial viability, risk management, and sustainability. It teaches students to communicate and collaborate with others who have different backgrounds and perspectives which is an important quality in property development and investment practices due to the interdisciplinary nature of the property industry. The program also equips students with the ability to think critically to apply theories for solving property development and investment issues. It encourages students to demonstrate analytical thinking by planning and executing research and professional development projects to continuously advance their practices to sustain competitive advantage in today’s dynamic business environment. It finally offers the opportunity for students to examine the property industry from the global perspective which serves as a learning platform to contextualise international issues into a local context relevant to their professional practices.
