Program Description

Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles to developing technologies and solving problems in a diverse range of health care related fields e.g. implantable bionics, drug delivery systems, medical imaging, radiotherapies, orthopedic devices, telemedicine, robotic surgery, cell and tissue engineering, records management, physical rehabilitation and others.

This Graduate Diploma program provides graduates with opportunities to extend their professional knowledge. Candidates may undertake interdisciplinary studies and, subject to approval, are able to take courses from any school in the Engineering Faculty, other Faculties of the University and other universities or institutions. Consequently, study programs may be constructed to best suit to the individual needs of particular candidates.

Period of candidature: The minimum period is 2 academic semesters (full-time) or 4 academic semesters (part-time) from the date of enrolment. The maximum period of candidature is 4 academic semesters (full-time) and 8 academic semesters (part-time). In special cases an extension of time may be granted.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

Please contact
Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering for information.

Program Structure

Candidates must complete 48 units of credit in postgraduate courses, at least 36 UoC from the electives listed under the Biomedical Engineering - 8660 program listing in this handbook AND up to 12 UoC of other postgraduate courses, subject to approval by the head of school. Note that the BIOM9914 Masters Project is not available in this program nor are undergraduate courses allowed.

Before final course selection candidates should submit an intended program plan to the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering for discussion and approval.

Candidates who meet certain academic progress requirements (normally a credit average performance or better in their first semester) may be considered for transfer to the 8660 Masters program with advanced standing. Further enquiries should be made with the School.

    Academic Rules

An applicant for admission to the Graduate Diploma program should be a graduate of an approved university in a relevant discipline, such as engineering, medicine, medical sciences and some other science and health science or have other qualifications as may be approved by the Faculty of Engineering.

Candidates must complete 48 units of credit in postgraduate courses, 36 of which must be selected from the electives listed under the Biomedical Engineering - 8660 program. The BIOM9914 Masters Project is not available in this program nor are undergraduate courses allowed.

Students who perform well in the first semester of the Graduate Diploma (normally a credit average performance or better) may be able to articulate to the Master of Biomedical Engineering (MBiomedE) directly with advanced standing.
