Prospective students should refer instead to the new program, Master of Engineering Science - 8538. The Master of Engineering Science program is offered to students form an engineering background and the degree may be awarded based on coursework with an optional 12 unit of credit research project (Masters Thesis). This project may be conducted either at the UNSW or in a hospital or other external organisation. The course of study offers scope for original research into the application of engineering principles and technology to medical problems.
Candidates may undertake interdisciplinary studies and, subject to approval, are able to take courses from any school in the Engineering Faculty, other faculties of the University and other universities or institutions. Consequently, study programs best suited to the individual needs of candidates may be selected. Before enrolment an applicant should submit an intended program for approval by the school or division offering the majority of the units of credit to ensure that the prerequisite background held is adequate for all courses including those taken in other schools or institutions. Period of candidature: The minimum period is 2 academic sessions (full-time) or 4 academic sessions (part-time) from the date of enrolment. The maximum period of candidature is 4 academic sessions (full-time) and 8 academic sessions (part-time). In special cases an extension of time may be granted. Candidates are required to complete a program totaling a minimum of 48 units of credit composed of graduate level courses. The program may include an optional 12 units of credit research project (Masters Thesis).
Individual study programs, generally selected from the courses listed below, are to be approved by the Head of School or nominee. Although appropriate graduate level courses may be taken from other schools within the University a minimum of 30 units of credit are to be selected from courses offered by the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering (BIOM9xxx) (please see session options under the Biomedical Engineering - 8660 program listing in this handbook). No undergraduate courses are allowed in this program. Before enrolment applicants should submit an intended program plan to the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering for approval.
