Program Description

The Graduate Certificate in Research Management and Commercialisation is coordinated and managed by the Australian School of Business. The program is designed primarily for currently enrolled PhD students as well as graduates from all disciplines who lack relevant training in research management and commercialisation in their current professional careers. The certificate will be particularly relevant to PhD students conducting or planning to conduct research which may have some commercial application or who wish to pursue careers in industry where commercialisation of research is important. As such, it is expected that the course will be of most interest to students undertaking research predominantly from the Faculties of Science, Engineering and Medicine.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The program will develop student abilities in areas essential to the successful commercialisation of technology based discoveries including: creativity and lateral thinking, technology assessment, business and accounting principles, business planning, R&D and corporate funding, IP management, communication, negotiation and marketing, regulation and administration through to research ethics.

The course sequence has been structured to follow and augment the skills developed by PhD students as they progress through their research program and will involve teaching contributions from appropriate university academics and professionals, and industry and government representatives.

To be awarded the Graduate Certificate, students will successfully complete a total of four courses (total of 24 units of credit). Students enrol in one or two courses per semester. The expectation is that currently enrolled HDR students will enrol in one course per semester completing the four courses in a maximum of two years. HDR students who have submitted their PhD thesis may complete more than one unit per semester in the semester of thesis submission.

Assessment in most courses is focused on performance in the process sections (workshops, tutorials and assignments) with a minor percentage based on exam performance (fundamental lecture material).

Program Structure

Candidates for the Certificate will be required to complete a program of study comprising 24 units of credit (4 x 6UOC courses), including two core courses, and two electives from a selection of the courses indicated below:
