The Master of Computing and IT is intended for students with no or minimal prior computing background. Students with some computing background who want to obtain a broad understanding of computing might also find this program attractive.
Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes The aim of this program is to provide students with a broad-based IT education, enabling them to work in a range of positions in the IT industry. It is similar in scope to CSE's undergraduate BE (Computer Engineering) program.
Students complete the below Computing and Information Technology majors with the following restrictions:
Up to one Group B/C can be substituted for a non-advanced UNSW free elective. Up to 18uoc can be substituted with non-CSE courses of equivalent level and relevance Entry Requirements
There are three methods of entry into the MCompIT program.
Major(s)
Students who are not following the default Compuitng and Information Technology major are required to take specific courses to satisfy their chosen major. A total of 30uoc must be taken in a chosen area to satisfy one of the following majors. COMPAS8682 - Autonomous Systems COMPBS8682 - Bioinformatics COMPCS8682 - Information Technoloyg (default major) COMPDS8682 - Database Systems COMPES8682 - e-Commerce Systems COMPIS8682 - Internetworking COMPKS8682 - Knowledge Systems & Data Mining Course Groups Course availability is subject to timetabling and teaching resources. Extended versions of any course may be used instead. Group A - Introductory Courses Group A courses consist of bridging material in computing taught at an accelerated pace for MCompIT and GradDip students. Note: COMP9032 can be replaced by COMP9022 if this course has already been completed.
Group B and C - Core Computing Group B/C courses constitute the core of the IT discipline. Graduates of a CSE postgraduate coursework program should know several of these areas.
Note: COMP9222 can be replaced by COMP9221 if this course has already been completed.
Group D - Advanced Electives Group D courses are advanced electives that can be used by a student to gain specialisation in one of several areas of Computing and IT.
Advanced Standing
Students who believe they have thoroughly covered equivalent material in their previous studies may sit an exemption exam for some or all of the Group A courses. This would reduce the overall length of the program by up to four courses. Project Option Two Group D courses can be replaced with a research project. Students must have a distinction average, have reached the agreement of a CSE supervisor, and apply for the project in final semester of their program. Projects are graded, and students deliver a seminar and submit a written report.
