Program Summary
The Graduate Diploma in CIT is intended for students with no or minimal prior computing background. Students with some computing background who want to obtain a broad understanding of computing might also find this program attractive.
The GradDip will be most attractive to those who are not eligible for direct admission to the MCompIT program, as well as those seeking a shorter qualification. Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes The aim of this program is to provide students with a broad-based IT education, enabling them to work in a range of positions in the IT industry. It is similar in scope to CSE's undergraduate BSc (Computer Science) program.
Students complete the below Computing and Information Technology majors with the following restrictions:
Up to 18uoc can be substituted with non-CSE courses of equivalent level and relevance. Note: Students who intend on articulating to the MCompIT program should consider taking a Project Management course such as GBAT9101 as a Group B/C substitution, as this topic is now core for MCompIT students. There are three methods of entry into the GradDip CIT program.
Majors(s)
Students who are not following the default Compuitng and Information Technology major are required to take specific courses to satisfy their chosen major. A total of 18uoc must be taken in a chosen area to satisfy one of the following majors. COMPAS5432 - Autonomous Systems COMPBS5432 - Bioinformatics COMPCS5432 - Computing and Information Technoloyg (default major) COMPDS5432 - Database Systems COMPES5432 - e-Commerce Systems COMPIS5432 - Internetworking COMPKS5432 - Knowledge Systems & Data Mining Course Groups Course availability is subject to timetabling and teaching resources. Extended versions of any course may be used instead. Group A - Introductory Courses Group A courses consist of bridging material in computing taught at an accelerated pace for MCompIT and GradDip students. Note: COMP9032 can be replaced by COMP9022 if this couse has already been completed.
Group B and C - Core Computing Group B/C courses constitute the core of the IT discipline. Graduates of a CSE postgraduate coursework program should know several of these areas.
Note: COMP9222 can be replaced by COMP9221 if this course has already been completed.
Group D - Advanced Electives
Group D courses are advanced electives that can be used by a student to gain specialisation in one of several areas of Computing and IT.
Completion Options
After successful completion of the GradDip students have two options:
Articulation
Students can apply to articulate from the GradDip program to the Master of Computing and Information Technology program (8682) provided they have failed no courses. Full credit will be granted where the student has not taken out the GradDip. Students intending to articulate to the MCompIT should pay careful attention when selecting their courses to ensure that they align with the program for the major of their preference. It may not be possible to transfer between GradDip and MCompIT program majors without completion of extra courses if students fail to plan appropriately. Advanced Standing Students who believe they have thoroughly covered equivalent material in their previous studies may sit an exemption exam for some or all of the Group A courses. This would reduce the overall length of the program by up to four courses. Students are advised to consult:
