Stream Outline

A cross-disciplinary program in Education and Applied Linguistics designed to provide qualified teachers and other educational professionals working or intending to work teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and/or Languages with a vocationally relevant degree which combines theory and practice.

Graduate Attributes

At the end of the stream, students should have acquired all of the following graduate attributes:
  1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the field of education as it relates to their specialist area of study, and the ability to synthesize and apply disciplinary principles and practices to new or complex environments.
  2. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of research-based learning and the ability to plan, analyse, present implement and evaluate complex activities that contribute to advanced professional practice and/or intellectual scholarship in education.
  3. Demonstrate advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  4. Communicate effectively to a range of audiences, and be capable of independent and collaborative enquiry and team-based leadership.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of international perspectives relevant to the educational field.
  6. Demonstrate an advanced capacity to recognise and negotiate the complex and often contested values and ethical practices that underlie education.

Stream Structure

The program consists of eight courses (48 units of credit): one EDST core course, three EDST elective courses and 4 LING elective courses. Students can choose a particular sequence of courses to meet national TESOL accreditation requirements, including 25 days of supervised professional practice in an intensive ESL setting and or working with ESL classes in mainstream school context (Strand 1), or if students already have a recognised qualification in TESOL but want to want to update and /or extend your professional learning, with the option of going on to higher degree studies, they can choose a more specialist focus (Strand 2), including completing a small-scale research project.

Strand 2: Sample course structure for qualified teachers who already have an accredited specialist qualification in TESOL and who want to update and /or extend their professional learning, with the option of going on to higher degree studies.

One EDST research methodology course, including

This involves the completion of an individual research project under the supervision of an academic member of staff in the School of Education. Typically, one-on-one meetings are held with the supervisor at a frequency that is determined between the student and the chosen supervisor.

*Up to four linguistics courses from the MA program in Applied Linguistics, including:
*Students are welcome to substitute up to two LING courses with any two EDST courses at the Master’s level offered by the School of Education if they better support their proposed research project. These may be any MEd level courses offered in the School of Education, including the TESOL and research methodology courses noted above.
