Plan Outline

The Finance specialisation is designed for students interested in gaining a broad understanding of financial concepts and problem solving techniques.

This specialisation is concerned with the modern fundamentals of corporate financial decision making with special reference to investment, financing and dividend distribution.

Plan Structure

In order to qualify for the Finance specialisation, must complete:

4 core courses
2 disciplinary core courses:
and 4 disciplinary courses:
and 2 elective courses selected from MCom offerings.

For those students who wish to extend their MCom (Finance) specialisation, it is recommended that the electives be taken from the following:
  • FINS5567 Banking and Financial Innovation (6UOC)
Note: Students who commenced prior to 2007 can complete COMM5004 instead of COMM5005.

Professional Accreditation

The Securities Institute of Australia
The Securities Institute of Australia grants exemptions from certain courses leading to associate membership of the Institute to graduates who have completed finance courses offered in the BCom, BEc or MCom degree programs. Applications for registeration, exemption or admission should be made direct to the Institute: www.securities.edu.au

The Australian Institute of Banking and Finance (AIBF)
The educational requirements for Associateship will be satisfied on the completion of a University degree specialising in Banking and Finance which includes a management, a marketing and four banking and finance courses. The educational requirements for Senior Associateship will be satisfied on the completion of a University degree specialising in Banking and Finance which includes a management, a marketing and four banking and finance courses and employment in the Australia/ NZ banking and finance industry for at least two years . Graduates who have met the academic, but not work experience requirements for Senior Associates, qualify for Asscoiate membership. Students are advised to contact AIBF for current requirements: www.aibf.com.au


Chartered Secretaries Australia Ltd (CSA).
This CSA is the professional association for 10,000 company secretaries and corporate managers in Australia. It also operates as the Australian Division of the International, 70,000 member strong, Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators to which most CSA members also belong. CSA also sets the standards for entry into the profession through the Graduate Diploma in Applied Corporate Governance.

The CSA accredits subjects which, if completed, count towards the academic requirements of both professional associations. During the course of their studies, students are encouraged to become CSA Student Members.
