All lawyers practicing law in the 21st century increasingly must be prepared to analyze domestic legal problems in both an interdisciplinary and global context. This course explores the way that substantive energy and environmental laws operate in the emerging global marketplace. The course is taught using a combination of lectures and group discussion of specific case studies including the Gulf of Mexico oil rig spill, sales of hydroelectric power to New York, and legal issues involved in the prospect of starting a nuclear power industry in Australia. The fundaments and intersections of energy law and environmental law are explored as well as applicable international law. The course demonstrates the integration of law, economics and ethics in energy and environmental decision making.
