Description

This course considers legal, strategic and management issues involved in the use of intellectual property particularly in real world commercial settings. With an emphasis on case studies the course will be of particular interest to both lawyers and non-lawyers in that it provides both a framework to develop an IP strategy and management program, as well as working examples of IP strategy and management in practice.

Recommended Prior Knowledge

This course assumes a working knowledge of intellectual property based on study at undergraduate level or through completion of the postgraduate course LAWS8017 Intellectual Property Law. You will be expected to have an overview of intellectual property law and/or to have read a recent IP textbook or Stewart et al, Intellectual Property in Australia (5th ed) (LexisNexis, 2014).

Course Objectives

A candidate who has successfully completed this course should:
  • have a good understanding of the key core ingredients and variables that affect an IP management program
  • have a framework from which to develop IP management programs
  • have a good understanding of IP valuation methods
  • have a good understanding of the development of a number of strategies to apply in the use and enforcement of IP rights worldwide
  • have a good understanding of the different types of patent searches and their strategic use
