Description

To enable students to develop an understanding of the issues involved in complex contemporary areas of international law.

Recommended Prior Knowledge

Learning Outcomes

After having completed this course successfully, a participant will:
  • Understand the issues involved in complex contemporary areas of international law;
  • Consolidate and deepen understanding of international law and the modalities through which it informs and creates the world in which we live

Main Topics

The formation and operation of the rules of international law will be examined and assessed in the context of current events. The general substantive framework for the course therefore changes from year to year. In 2012, this course will take as its theme peoples’ tribunals, international law and human rights. Since the 1960s there have been dozens of “peoples’ tribunals”, “citizens’ tribunals” or similar commissions of inquiry established outside formal State and international structures. The aim of this course is to examine this phenomenon and how these institutions are conceived of by those who establish and participate in them. It will analyse their role as forms of accountability that exist outside State-sponsored structures.
