Learning Outcomes

After having completed this course successfully, a participant will:
  • Understand the issues involved in complex contemporary areas of international law;
  • Consolidate and deepen understanding of international law and the modalities through which it informs and creates the world in which we live

Main Topics

The formation and operation of the rules of international law will be examined and assessed in the context of current events. The general substantive framework for the course therefore changes from year to year. In 2013, this course will focus on international cultural heritage law and its dynamics, both internal (cultural heritage regimes relating to one another) and external (relationship to other areas of international law such as international human rights law and international environmental law). The aim of the course is to provide an overview of international law on the matter, and to understand the limitations of current international legal regimes. The course will engage legal literature critically with anthropological, sociological and heritage studies literature.
