Description
• non-law graduate students in the Graduate Diploma in Applied Intellectual Property; and
• non-law graduate students in the Graduate Diploma in Law, Media and Journalism or Master of Law, Media and Journalism.
This course is also available to students enrolled in the Master of Legal Studies and the Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies.
This course consists of three inter-related modules:
- Module 1: Introduction to Applied Intellectual Property/ Introduction to Media Law introduces students to the nature, sources and theoretical foundations of intellectual property/media law;
- Module 2: Australian Legal System & Process looks at the structure of and principles governing common law legal systems and at the role of constitutions;
- Module 3: Research & Writing in a Legal Environment provides training in legal research, as well as the formal requirements for legal writing, which are essential for the successful completion of law assignments.

Course Objectives
- Show a foundational understanding of the sources, nature and theoretical underpinnings of Australian law;
- Demonstrate a working understanding of the fundamentals of Australian intellectual property or media law;
- Demonstrate a mastery of the legal research which is essential for the successful completion of law assignments, as well as the formal requirements for legal writing.
Main Topics
- The structure of and principles governing common law legal systems, including that of Australia;
- Fundamental legal research and legal writing skills;
- The nature, sources and theoretical foundations of intellectual property or media law.
Assessment
- Module 1: Introduction to Applied Intellectual Property/Introduction to Media Law. One in-class test of one hour’s duration will be held shortly after the last class in this module. Worth 25% of the total assessment.
- Module 2: Australian Legal System and Process. One in-class test of 45 minutes duration will be held shortly after the last class in this module. Worth 25% of the total assessment.
- Module 3: Research & Writing in a Legal Environment. Assessment for this module will be worth 50% of the total assessment and is comprised of three parts: class participation (25%); completed class exercises (25%); and, one Research Skills assignment (50%).
