Description This course focuses on the variety of legal issues that are raised by commercial transactions involving intellectual property. With a strong emphasis on case studies and the practical application of the law, it will consider the intellectual property issues raised in mergers and acquisitions and public offerings; due diligence involving intellectual property; insolvency and intellectual property; and securitisation and taxation of intellectual property. The complex issue of valuation of intellectual property will also be considered in detail. The course will be of particular interest to commercial lawyers dealing with these types of issues, as well as researchers and research managers and others whose work requires a detailed understanding of commercial dealings involving intellectual property rights.

Recommended Prior Knowledge This course assumes a working knowledge of intellectual property based on study at undergraduate level or through completion of the postgraduate course LAWS4017. You will be expected to have an overview of intellectual property law or to have read J. McKeough, A. Stewart and P. Griffith, Intellectual Property in Australia (3rd ed) (LexisNexis Butterworths, 2004) and J. McKeough, K. Bowrey and P. Griffith, Intellectual Property: Commentary and Materials (4th ed) (Thomson Law Book Co, 2007).
