The Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Aviation (Management) are complementary programs, with Aviation providing a specific industry context in which to position broader skills developed within the Commerce degree. Graduates of the dual degree will be ideal candidates for the highly competitive graduate intake programs of Qantas and Virgin Australia airlines.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Commerce component, students will have the ability to:
  • demonstrate business knowledge and apply that knowledge in business problems
  • demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • present complex issues in coherent written statements and oral presentations
  • demonstrate understanding of disciplinary issues in a local or global context
  • demonstrate understanding of the principles of working collaboratively in teams
  • understand the social and ethical dimensions in their chosen disciplinary areas
For Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes for the Bachelor of Aviation (Management), students should refer to the 3981 Bachelor of Aviation (Management) program page.

Program Structure

Students are required to complete the disciplinary core for the Bachelor of Commerce consisting of 96 UOC, and the disciplinary core for the Bachelor of Aviation (Management) consisting of 96 UOC. Where the requirements for the two programs are completed in less than 192 units of credit due to overlapping courses, students may satisfy the remaining units of credit from those offered by the Australian School of Business or the courses listed as electives for the Bachelor of Aviation (Management).

Requirements for the Bachelor of Commerce in concurrent mode

Students are required to complete at least 96 UOC in courses offered by the Australian School of Business consisting of:
  • Compulsory core courses (24 UOC)
  • Flexible core courses (24 UOC)
  • A business Major (48 UOC)

Compulsory core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses):

Flexible core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses). Students should choose four courses from the following list:
Major requirements: 48 UOC in an approved disciplinary stream offered by the Australian School of Business (See Table A on program page 3502), containing at least 18 UOC at level 3. (Note that the 48 UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 42 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the core.)

Note: Additional courses may need to be taken from within the Australian School of Business to ensure you complete a total of 96 UOC of Commerce courses within the B Com component.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Aviation (Management) in concurrent mode

Students are required to complete at least 96 UOC of courses as follows:
  • Compulsory core courses in Aviation (Management) (60 UOC)
  • Aviation (Management) electives (36 UOC)
Compulsory Aviation (Management) courses:
Please note: Students in this dual Commerce / Aviation (Management) program do not take MATH1041. ECON1203, completed under the Commerce component of the program, fulfils this requirement.

Aviation (Management) electives:
Choose 6 UOC from:

Choose 12 UOC from the following Stage 2 electives:

Choose 12 U0C from the following Stage 3 electives:

Notes:
  • Students are expected to take lower stage courses in preference to higher stage courses in order to complete lower stage program requirements as soon as possible, i.e. stage 1 courses should be completed prior to stage 2 courses. Stages of courses are identified by the first number in the course code, ie AVIA1321 is a stage 1 course.
  • Students can take a maximum of 90 UOC of level 1 courses in the dual program – 60 UOC of level 1 for the Bachelor of Commerce and 30 UOC level 1 for the Bachelor of Aviation (Management).
  • Students completing a major in Management or Human Resource Management as part of their Bachelor of Commerce program cannot take MGMT2721 as an elective in the Aviation (Management) program. These students will need to choose an alternative Aviation stage 2 elective.
  • As there is greater flexibility in core course offerings by the Australian School of Business, students should consider prioritising their core Aviation (Management) courses when planning their enrolment each semester.
