Description

This course is compulsory for students enrolled in the Masters of Business Law and Graduate Diploma in Business Law and consists of two modules.

Module 1: Business Law Sources introduces students to the sources of Business Law including company information services and business records such as ASIC company searches and various ASIC registers.

Module 2: Research & Writing in a Legal Environment provides training in legal research, as well as the formal requirements for legal writing, which are essential for the successful completion of law assignments.

This course must be taken by non-law graduate students in the first semester of the Master of Business Law and the Graduate Diploma in Business Law.

Course Objectives

A candidate who has successfully completed this course should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a mastery of the legal research which is essential for the successful completion of law assignments, as well as the formal requirements for legal writing
  • Conduct research of business law related materials that are in the public domain to facilitate the practical application of law to business decisions and regulatory compliance.

Assessment

Assessment will be made on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis, and will consist of the following:

(a) Module 1: Business Law Sources. One in-class test of one hour’s duration will be held shortly after the last class in this module. Worth 25% of the total assessment.

(b) Module 2: Research & Writing in a Legal Environment. Assessment for this module will be worth 75% of the total assessment and is comprised of three parts: class participation (10%); completed class exercises (15%); and, one Research Skills assignment (50%).
