Linguistics is the scientific study of language, its structure and functions. Linguistics provides you with a basis for a variety of practical applications, including the teaching and learning of foreign languages, translating and interpreting, facilitating intercultural communication, diagnosing and treating language disorders, developing language curricula in schools and improving literacy skills.
What you will study Our courses in Linguistics focus on the traditional core areas of language structure including: the sound system (phonetics and phonology), grammar (morphology and syntax) and meaning (semantics and pragmatics). We also examine how contemporary linguists deal with issues of language use and intercultural communication.
