Spanish is the language of over 400 million people. It is spoken officially in 23 countries and is the de facto second language of the United States with approximately 40 million Spanish speakers. Spanish and Latin American Studies aims to provide students with an informed understanding of the Spanish-speaking world through the study of Spanish language, film, literature, civilisation, linguistics and history. This approach aims to enable to students to achieve a high level of communicative competence in Spanish while offering them a critical understanding of history, society and culture.

Studying Spanish and Latin American Studies at UNSW

The study of Spanish and Latin American Studies at UNSW is primarily through the School of Humanities and Languages in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and caters to both elementary and intermediate students. Students' learning experience can be enhanced through summer study in programs offered in Oaxaca, Mexico and Seville, Spain (http://www.international.unsw.edu.au/outbound-opportunities/studying-outside-australia)

At an undergraduate level, courses in Spanish and Latin American Studies are available in language, culture, film, literature, linguistics and history. Honours and postgraduate programs at Masters and Doctorate levels are also available.
