Description Russian Studies aims to provide students with an informed understanding of Russia and the former Soviet Union through the study of Russian language, literature, civilisation and history.
Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, many opportunities for study and employment have become available in Russia, Ukraine and other countries of the former USSR, and students are encouraged to undertake courses in Russian directly in these countries, either during their study at UNSW or following graduation. **************************************************************************************** Please note: In the first half of 2006 the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will be reviewing its capacity to provide courses in the Russian language. It is possible that the Faculty will decide to phase out all courses in this language and so it has decided to withdraw RUSS1111 Introductory Russian 1 and RUSS1112 Introductory Russian 2 in 2006. Upper level courses will be offered in 2006 [as detailed in the Online Handbook and Schedule of Classes]. Students who were considering studying Introductory Russian in 2006 should refer to the Online Handbook for alternative language courses. Students may also contact the Faculty Office to discuss options for cross-institutional study in Russian or seek further advice about appropriate alternatives offered by the Faculty. **************************************************************************************** Studying Russian at UNSW The study of Russian at UNSW is primarily through the School of Modern Languages (http://languages.arts.unsw.edu.au). Although language study is required for a major sequence in Russian Studies, several of the Upper Level courses require no knowledge of the Russian language and can be taken by students from other schools interested in learning about Russian literature, society and history.
