Program Description

Students may seek to undertake a five-year full-time dual degree program leading to the award of the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Science (BE (Hons) BSc). The Faculty of Engineering administers the program, and delegates administration to the School which offers the Engineering discipline selected. Students should seek advice from the relevant School Office in the first instance, from the Faculty of Engineering, or from the Faculty of Science for the Science component.

With this dual degree program, students take the 168 units of credit core of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) 3707 and the 96 units of credit core of the Bachelor of Science program 3970. Because of the overlap of 24 units of credit of Science courses in both core, the total units of credit required for completion is 240 UOC, rather than 264 UOC (please see Academic Rules below for more details).

Program Structure

Contained in the University Handbook are typical program structures for each of the Schools within the Faculty of Engineering, and for the Faculty of Science. The programs may be varied by students according to the rules governing electives, pre- and co-requisites and progression within each program. Subject to pre- and co-requisites and progression rules, students may take courses at any time during the program; it is the responsibility of each student to ensure that the rules governing award of the degrees have been met and that the program of study in each session of enrolment is feasible with regards to progression and timetabling.

General Education Requirements

Students are enrolled in dual undergraduate programs, leading to the award of two degrees, each in a different faculty, and therefore meet their General Education requirements.

Honours

Honours in Engineering

Award of Class of Honours
  • Class 1: WAM of at least 80 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
  • Class 2 Division 1: WAM of at least 75 and Thesis Mark of at least 65
  • Class 2 Division 2: WAM of at least 65 and Thesis Mark of at least 65

Academic Rules

Requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in dual degree mode with the Bachelor of Science

To obtain the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), when taken with the Bachelor of Science, a student must successfully complete courses that total at least 264 units of credit and include courses making up at least 168 units of credit described in the stream requirements for the BE (Hons) specialisation for which the student is enrolled. Students must also complete 60 days of Industrial Training.

Students may not count more than 60 units of credit of level 1 courses in the168 units of credit required for the Engineering (Honours) component.

Progression

To ensure that all students who complete the Engineering component attain the honours level learning outcomes of the program, the progression rules for the program are as follows:
  1. No level 4 BE (Hons) course until 102 UOC of BE (Hons) stream passed
  2. No level 3 BE (Hons) course until all Introductory core passed
  3. If any of the conditions below apply, students will be transferred to the Bachelor of Engineering Science program, with such transfer subject to appeal:
  • 2 fails in any given core course
  • After half or more of the BE (Hons) stream attempted (more than 84UOC), 50% or more of BE (Hons) stream courses have been failed
  • Prior to the final 48 UOC of the stream (120 UOC or more of the BE (Hons) stream completed), a WAM of less than 50%.
Substitution

Students may substitute up to 12 UOC of Advanced Disciplinary courses (Level 5) in place of Disciplinary Knowledge courses from a school specified stream list of courses with the approval of the Program or Stream Authority.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in dual degree mode with the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

When taken in dual degree mode a Bachelor of Science is comprised of 96 units of credit which includes:
  • An approved major from the Bachelor of Science program; and
  • Science elective courses.
When a student undertakes the Bachelor of Science as part of a dual degree, the program rules for the Bachelor of Science are as follows:
  1. Students must complete a minimum of 96 units of credit.
  2. Students must complete at least one approved Bachelor of Science major, and this must be declared before enrolling in Level II courses (see the 3970 Bachelor of Science program page for a list of approved majors). Information about how to declare a major can be found on the Science Student Centre website.
  3. Students may choose to complete an optional minor using their Science electives (see the 3970 Bachelor of Science program page for list of approved minors).
  4. Students cannot complete a minor with the same name as their nominated major, and Level II and III courses cannot be double-counted between majors and minors. More than one minor may be completed subject to the limit on double-counting. Students must declare their minor(s) before their final semester.
  5. In addition to the courses required for a student's chosen major, students must take 'Science' courses so that the major plus 'Science' courses total 96 UoC. ‘Science’ courses are listed in Table 1 of the 3970 Bachelor of Science page.
  6. Students must complete at least 24 UoC of Level I ‘Science’ courses. ‘Science’ courses are listed in Table 1 of the 3970 Bachelor of Science page. Students may not enrol into Level II courses until at least 30 UoC of Level I courses have been successfully completed.
  7. Students may not enrol into Level III courses until at least 72 UoC of courses have been successfully completed.
Notes:
  • Students who intend to complete a double major or a major combined with a minor in the Bachelor of Science when taken as part of a dual degree should be aware that it may be difficult to complete these combinations within 96 UoC. This may involve extra time and cost to complete, and may have visa implications for international students.
  • Students majoring in Physical Oceanography, Mathematics or Statistics in the Bachelor of Science will need to replace one or two of their second year Mathematics courses in their Engineering program with second year Mathematics courses required for the relevant Science major. For further information regarding this, students should read this document Mathematics in BE/BSc/BAdvSci (Hons) - Mathematics or Climate Dynamics Major or see staff in the Science Student Centre or School of Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Students undertaking a major in Biology, Ecology, Geography, Earth Science, or Marine Science as part of the Bachelor of Science, will be exempted from completing MATH1041 Statistics for Life and Social Sciences and BEES2041 Data Analysis for Life and Earth Sciences where MATH1131 Mathematics 1A, MATH1231 Mathematics 1B, and a relevant second year statistics courses has been completed as part of the Bachelor of Engineering. For further information regarding this, please see the Science Student Centre.
  • Students undertaking a major in Physics as part of the Bachelor of Science, will need to replace one or two of their second year Mathematics courses in their Engineering program with second year Mathematics courses required for this major. For further information regarding this, students should read this document Mathematics in BE/BSc/AdvSci(Hons) - Physics Majoror see staff in the Science Student Centre or School of Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Students completing a major in Biotechnology or Neuroscience may need to use their first year Engineering elective to take a course for this major, otherwise, it will require 246 units of credit to complete the requirements for the Engineering degree and Biotechnology or Neuroscience major. This could involve an extra semester of study, extra cost and would have visa implications for international students. Students wishing to major in Biotechnology or Neuroscience should seek advice from the Science Student Centre as soon as they start planning their enrolment.
  • Students are not permitted to declare a Bioinformatics major in the Bachelor of Science when taking the Bioinformatics Engineering stream for their Engineering (Honours) component.
  • In all Engineering/Science dual degrees, COMP courses do not count towards the Science component and will not contribute to the minimum 96 UoC of required ‘Science’ courses described in rule no. 3 above.
  • Where students complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering and the Bachelor of Science in less than 240 units of credit, the remaining elective courses taken to bring the total to 240 units of credit must be taken from the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Science.
Programs of study

The programs of study which may be taken for the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Science are governed by the normal rules for award of the BE (Hons) and BSc in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science respectively, which specify:

(i) units of credit;
(ii) corequisites, prerequisites, assumed knowledge;
(iii) the structure of the degree program; and
(iv)any special conditions.

Award of the degrees

A candidate for the award of the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or Bachelor of Science as part of a dual degree program shall not be eligible to be awarded either degree until he or she has completed both degree requirements.

A student who completes the requirements for both the BE (Hons) and BSc degrees shall receive at graduation a separate testamur for each of the degrees.

A student may apply to discontinue the dual degree BE (Hons) BSc programs and elect to complete either the BE (Hons) or BSc degree in accordance with the rules governing award of that degree. Following discontinuation of one of the programs (BE (Hons) or BSc), courses which count toward that program may not in general count toward the remaining single degree unless they meet the single degree requirements in their own right. In particular, the General Education requirements of the single degree must be met in full.

Administration of the programs

(i) A student's general program will be administered by the Faculty of Engineering and delegated to administration by the School governing the engineering specialisation.
(ii) Students' programs will be administered by the Faculty of Science for the BSc component of the program and by of the Faculty of Engineering for the BE part of the program.
(iii) The Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering shall jointly exercise authority in any matter concerning the dual degree programs not otherwise covered by these rules.
