Program Description

THIS PROGRAM IS FOR STUDENTS TRANSFERRING INTO HONOURS FROM PROGRAM 3457 BACHELOR OF MUSIC BACHELOR OF SCIENCE THROUGH A UNSW INTERNAL PROGRAM TRANSFER.

The Dual award degree Bachelor of Music (Honours) Bachelor of Science is a five-year program (full-time).

The Bachelor of Music (Honours) is specifically for high-achieving students already admitted to the Bachelor of Music program. It allows Bachelor of Music students to spend their final year of study completing a research thesis or a practice-based research project and thesis as well as undertaking discipline specific research training through the coursework component.

An Advanced Entry Scheme is available to suitably qualified applicants. Students admitted into the advanced entry scheme may receive a block credit of up to 36 UOC in Level 1 music courses.

The first three years of the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music (Honours) are common to both degrees. Before transferring to the Bachelor of Music (Honours) students must successfully complete all core and stream requirements for levels 1-3 of the Bachelor of Music and attain a minimum WAM of 70 in Music courses. Students undertaking the Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Dual mode must complete all core and stream requirements for levels 1-3 (96 UOC) of the Bachelor of Music before proceeding to level 4.

    Program Structure

When taken concurrently a Bachelor of Science is comprised of 96 units of credit which includes:-
    • An approved major from the Bachelor of Science program; and
    • Science elective courses.
Academic rules relating to the Bachelor of Science in Dual mode are as follows:
    1. Students must complete a minimum of 96 units of credit.
    2. Students must complete at least one approved Bachelor of Science major, and this must be declared before enrolling in Level II courses (see the 3970 Bachelor of Science page for approved majors). Information about how to declare a major can be found on the Science Student Centre website.
    3. Students may choose to complete an optional minor using their Science electives (see the 3970 Bachelor of Science page for the list of approved minors). Students cannot complete a minor with the same name as their nominated major, and Level II and III courses cannot be double-counted between majors and minors. More than one minor may be completed subject to the limit on double-counting. Students must declare their minor(s) before their final semester.
    4. In addition to the courses required for a student's chosen major, students must take 'Science' courses so that the major plus 'Science' courses total 96 UoC. ‘Science’ courses are listed in Table 1 on the 3970 Bachelor of Science page.
    5. Students must complete at least 24 UoC of Level I ‘Science’ courses. ‘Science’ courses are listed in Table 1 of the 3970 Bachelor of Science page.

Double Majors and Minors in Dual Degrees

Students who intend to complete a double major or a major combined with a minor in the Bachelor of Science when taken as part of a dual degree should be aware that it may be difficult to complete these combinations within 96 UoC. This may involve extra time and cost to complete, and may have visa implications for international students.

    Important Information

The Academic Rules for the UNSW BMus (Hons) BSc and the online enrolment facility provide students with a wide range of course choices. The online enrolment facility checks that students meet the enrolment requirements for individual courses but not that a course complies with Program Rules. Students are responsible for ensuring they are enrolling in accordance with the Academic Rules outlined above. Students should not assume that because they have enrolled in a course online that the course is automatically credited to their degree program.
