Program Description

This program has been replaced by Program 4820 Bachelor of Fine Arts/Bachelor of Arts.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts/Bachelor of Arts (BFA BA) is a 4-year dual award program which combines an education in the humanities, social sciences and the creative and performing arts with a qualification designed for those who may wish to involve themselves as practitioners in the visual arts or related fields

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

Students will acquire a sound knowledge base in both in the Fine Arts and in their chosen specialisation/s in the Bachelor of Arts component of their degree.

The BFA component aims to:

Provide an opportunity for students to undertake rigorous and demanding studies at tertiary level from a wide range of approaches and disciplines within the visual arts.
Provide the opportunity for students to explore the visual arts through a critical examination of the possibilities they offer and by use of available technological resources.
Encourage students to develop increased self-motivation as developing independent and professional practitioners.
Provide students with:

an understanding of concepts relevant to aesthetics and the visual arts;
understanding of various media through practice and experimentation with such media;
an understanding of research practice in fine arts, and a capacity to engage with research;
a confidence and competence in decision making, together with an appreciative and informed awareness of viewpoints in the visual arts other than their own; and
an understanding of the historical and theoretical underpinning of contemporary fine art practice.

5. Encourage students to realise their own intellectual and creative potential.
6. Increase students' awareness of, and sensitivity to, their environment.

The Program Objectives of the UNSW BA are:

To develop informed understanding of human experience, human culture and human society
To teach the tools and methods of understanding associated with Humanities and Social Science disciplines, and to encourage students to perceive the relationships between these disciplines
To encourage the breadth of vision and critical thinking associated with interdisciplinary scholarship and research
To enable students to place contemporary Australian society and culture in an historical and comparative context
To engage critically with fundamental questions about value in both ethical and aesthetic contexts
To develop the skills of critical, creative and imaginative thinking about society, culture and the arts
To promote the techniques and value of reasoned and openminded discussion and debate
To foster understanding of the experiences and world-views of other times, other places, and other cultures.

Minor Streams

All majors are available to be completed in minor stream ("Non-designated Minor"). There are, however, some areas of study that are only available as Minors. These are known as "Designated Minors". Art History and Theory cannot be taken as a Minor in the Dual Award. The Designated Minors for the Bachelor of Arts are:

Language Studies for Commencing Mid-Year Students

If your language skills are assessed as Level A in Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced or Professional you cannot commence study until Semester 1.

Award with Distinction

High achieving students who secure a WAM of 75 across their program and who have completed at least 48 UOC of their program at UNSW are eligible for the award of their Pass Degree "with Distinction".

Honours

Students undertaking the BFA in Dual Award mode may apply to complete an
additional year (48UOC) of study for the award of Honours.

Honours in Bachelor of Arts component

After completion of 144 UOC including all of the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts dual degree, high achieving students may apply for admission to the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (Honours) program 4504. Entry to Honours requires a WAM of 70 or higher in the stream(s) seeking to be further studied.

Academic Rules

To satisfy the Fine Arts component of the dual award, students must have completed 48 UOC in their Fine Arts Major and 48 UOC in their Fine Arts Streams.
