The Bachelor of Environmental Management program contains a core sequence of compulsory courses, a choice of disciplinary Majors and choices from a group of Directed Electives. The Majors include Biology, Earth Science, Ecology, Environmental Chemistry, Geography and Marine Science.

The aim of the program is to provide a strong education in the skills and knowledge necessary to work or carry out research as an environmental scientist. In addition to the graduate attributes applicable to 3970 Bachelor of Science, graduates of the B. Env. Mgmt. will need to be able to place their understanding of the scientific aspects of the environment within the general context of the policy and legal framework of environmental regulations, as well as economic and social dimensions to environmental policy and management. The B. Env. Mgmt. is designed as a 3 year (full-time) program. There is also an opportunity for students to continue onto an Honours year in Program 4500 Science (Honours), if they satisfy the entry requirements (usually a Credit WAM) or to combine the B. Env. Mgmt. with the Masters of Environmental Management (program 8623).

When completing the Bachelor of Environmental Management as a single degree, students must complete a minimum of 144 UoC (UoC). This 144 UoC is comprised of an approved Major, compulsory courses, Directed Electives, Free Electives and General Education as shown below:

When a student studies the Bachelor of Environmental Management as part of a dual degree with another UNSW undergraduate degree program, they are required to complete a minimum of 120 UoC comprised of an approved Major, compulsory B. Env. Mgmt. courses and Directed Electives.

Students in this program must also satisfy the General Education requirements. This is 12 UoC, usually taken in second and third year studies, as indicated in the Program Structure. For further information, please refer to "General Education" in the Table of Contents (see left-hand side of page). Students in the Bachelor of Environmental Management need to be aware that there are a number of General Education courses which they are excluded from taking. Progression to Honours in Environmental Management is described in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Program 4500). Entry to the BSc (Honours) Program is subject to academic performance and the number of places available in a School’s Honours program. Typically students require a minimum overall WAM of a Credit for entry into Honours, although due to the competitive nature of Honours in some Schools, the level of academic performance required may be higher. Where students have an overall WAM that is less than, but close to the entry requirements, Schools may consider academic performance in the major area of study. All decisions regarding entry to the BSc (Honours) are subject to the approval of the Program Authority.

Students seeking to enrol in Honours are required to have completed all the requirements for the B. Env. Mgmt. and satisfied all prerequisite requirements for Honours as specified by the relevant School. Students should check prerequisite requirements for Honours with the relevant School and consider potential projects and supervision as early as possible.

It is recommended that students who are granted admission into the BSc Honours Program delay their graduation from 3965 until after they complete Honours and so graduate with Bachelor of Environmental Management in [name of Major completed] and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in [name of Honours Plan completed].

The completion of Honours is a typical pathway for students who wish to undertake a postgraduate research qualification.

The B. Env. Mgmt. and Honours in Environmental Management is also articulated with the Masters of Environmental Management (Program 8623) and the nested Graduate Diploma (Program 5499) and Graduate Certificate (Program 7339). Students who have completed the B. Env. Mgmt. may receive recognition of prior learning and some Advanced Standing in these postgraduate coursework programs.

1. A student must complete a minimum of 144 Units of Credit (UoC) in Stages 1-3.

2. Students must complete a core set of courses in the B. Env. Mgmt. that totals 120 UoC. This core must contain 60 UoC from the compulsory course list plus one approved Major and courses from the Directed Electives list such that the compulsory courses plus approved Major plus Directed Electives totals 120 UoC. The remainder of courses for the single degree are Free Electives (that may be taken from any Faculty of the university) and General Education.

3. Students must complete all courses on the compulsory course list, an approved Major and Directed Electives to total 120 UoC. Please note that a course can only count once across these three categories: if a course is completed as a compulsory course or within an approved Major you must take additional Directed Electives so that the compulsory courses, approved Major and Directed Electives totals 120 UoC.

(Students do not need to declare a Major in their first year as they are encouraged to try a variety of level 1 Science courses to enable them to select an appropriate Major before commencing level II courses. It is not possible to complete a 'double Major' in this Program: if you wish to attempt more than one Major you should consider Program 3970.

Students may apply for additional courses to be considered for this list through the Science Student Centre. Courses will be considered by the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs) or nominee if they fulfill the objectives of the B. Env. Mgmt. Program.

8. No student may normally commence Level 2 courses until 24 UoC Level I have been successfully completed unless approved by the Program Convener or Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs).
