Program Description
For students already enrolled in 3731 please see the school website for the full program details.
The School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications offers a five year integrated degree program (240 UOC) leading to a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering (BE ME) in Electrical Engineering. The program includes a compulsory 24 UOC minor in a discipline outside the area of electrical engineering and telecommunications. Flexibility and choice are maintained throughout the entire structure by providing many elective courses.
Program Outcomes
The program outcomes are achieved through the learning outcomes of all courses including project work, electives and compulsory and relevant industrial training within the BE ME integrated degree program. The 5-year BE ME structure is designed such that at graduation, students would be expected to have desired skills competency, such as creative problem solving, innovative design, capacity for analytical and critical thinking, independent in reflective learning, in-depth discipline specific knowledge, good communication skills, professional attitude and ethical practice, and teamwork.
Requirements for the BE ME degree
To qualify for the Bachelor of Engineering/ Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering integrated degree, students must successfully complete 240 UoC, which is made up of the following:
- 156 UOC (3.25 Years) of Core comprising discipline-specific courses, discipline-specific thesis project work, design courses, and management courses.
- 48 UOC (1 Year) of professional electives comprising L3, L4 and L5 (postgraduate) electives.
- 36 UOC (0.75 Years) of breadth electives comprising a minor* and general education.
- Industrial Training (60 days, core for 0 UOC)
Notes:
This program has received provisional accreditation by Engineers Australia.

Program Structure
The program structure below gives one sequence of courses that fulfils the requirements of the degree. The timing of the general education courses and elective courses may be modified to optimize the student's choice of courses.
While some courses are given twice a year, many courses are given only once a year. In addition, courses may have prerequisites and exclusions.
Depending on the minor chosen the ordering of courses may differ (see minor list below). Students are strongly encouraged to consult the School about the sequence of courses in the program.
Students enrolling into Year 1 should refer to the School for the recommended first year program

Academic Rules
The student’s chosen program of study must comply with the following requirements:
- 96 UOC of discipline-specific core courses
- 12 UOC of management courses
- 12 UOC* of discipline specific ME project
- 12 UOC* of discipline specific BE project
- 24 UOC Design Courses

It is anticipated that this program will lead to accreditation by Engineers Australia.
* The 12 UOC BE and ME projects can be combined to form a 24 UOC project carried out over the 4th and 5th year of the program.
** Minor courses are taken from one discipline outside the area of electrical engineering and telecommunications, including Music, Industrial Design, Maths, Physics, Art, Computing, Commerce, etc.
*** Minors in excess of 24 UOC taken outside the Faculty of Engineering can also contribute to general education.
In considering advanced standing & credit transfer for any individual student, the rules of UNSW policy apply.
Only in exceptional circumstances will students be permitted to enrol in more than 24 units of credit in a session. The part-time mode will usually require students to enrol in a minimum of 18 UOC within any three consecutive sessions.

Industrial Experience Requirements
Students are required to submit a written report on their industry placements, typically 2000-3000 words, describing the organisation of the Company, summarising the work done and the training received. The report must be accompanied by certification of their industrial placement by a senior company representative.
Industrial Training will be assessed as a compulsory part of the course ELEC4122 Strategic Leadership and Ethics. Students must complete the industrial training requirement in order to receive a completed assessment for this course, but the industrial training assessment does not affect the mark received for ELEC4122.
