Program Description

This program is for new 2015 commencing students. If you are a continuing student please refer to the Online Handbook in the year you started your Dual Law degree or contact theFaculty of Law for advice.

The Bachelor of Advanced Science is designed to challenge students with an interest in critical thinking, research and innovation. The development of depth of understanding and practical skills in a discipline is a key part of the program, however, the degree also focuses on instilling a culture of research and enquiry through early induction into the research ethos and access to research groups and facilities.

The Law courses satisfy the requirements for the award of the professional LLB degree.


Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The UNSW School of Law instills in students the understandings, values, skills and qualities necessary to become highly qualified professionals with a strong sense of citizenship, community and social justice. A legal education at the UNSW Law School, therefore, develops graduates who have:
  1. a functioning and contextual knowledge of law and legal institutions;
  2. excellent intellectual skills of analysis, synthesis, critical judgment, reflection and evaluation;
  3. the capacity to engage in practical and scholarly research;
  4. effective oral and written communication skills both generally and in specific legal settings;
  5. a commitment to personal and professional self-development, ethical practice and social responsibility.
The Bachelor of Science (Advanced) component aims to:
  1. Graduate scientists with both breadth and depth of scientific knowledge and professional skills;
  2. Develop the capacity for critical thinking and independent learning;
  3. Provide training in the practice and management of research and instill a research ethos;
  4. Endue general and science-specific graduate attributes;
  5. Expose students to disciplines outside science, and the social context of science.

General Education Requirements

Students enrolled in dual law degrees (with exception to Jurisprudence/Law) are not required to complete general education courses.

Honours

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) will be awarded with the following levels of Honours:
Honours Class 1
Honours Class 2, Division 1
Honours Class 2, Division 2

To be awarded Honours in Law, students are not required to complete an additional year. Honours in Law is based on academic excellence throughout the degree. There are three criteria relevant for awarding Honours:
  • Honours Weighted Average Mark (WAM)
The Honours WAM weighting for core/electives for the Honours WAM is currently under review.
  • Satisfactory performance in written research
The Research Requirement for Honours is under review.
  • Not been found guilty of plagiarism or serious misconduct on more than one occasion and not more than one failure in the law program
