Program Description

The Bachelor of Music Bachelor of Commerce (BMus BCom) five-year Dual degree program enables you to complete a major sequence from those available in Commerce while studying for a specialist music program that offers intensive pre-professional training in one of four streams: Music Creative Practice, Music Inquiry, Sonic Arts and Music Pedagogy. All streams are supported by a variety of large and small, western and non-western music ensembles as well as extensive opportunities for developing musicianship skills.

Admission to the program is subject to a satisfactory music audition and an acceptable level of attainment in year 12 music studies or equivalent. Applicants must also satisfy the entry requirements to Commerce as well as to UNSW Arts & Social Sciences.

In addition, you will complete 96 UOC from the BCom degree, including an approved Major and other Commerce courses to a total of 96 UOC.

Program Structure

A total of 240 UOC is required to complete this Dual program. Students must satisfy the following requirements for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Commerce components.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Music in Dual Mode

The basic requirements for the degree in Dual mode (144 UOC) are:
  1. Musicology Core (42 UOC - 7 courses)
  2. Musicianship Core (24 UOC - 4 courses)
  3. Performance Laboratory Core (48 UOC - 8 courses)
  4. Stream Gateway Course (6 UOC - 1 course)
  5. Stream Courses (12 UOC - 2 courses)
  6. Prescribed Music Electives (12 UOC - 2 courses)

Prescribed Music Electives

Prescribed music electives are chosen from the list of offerings published by the program.

Award with Distinction

High achieving students who secure a WAM of 75 in each program and who have completed at least 48 UOC in each program at UNSW are eligible for the award of their Pass Degree "with Distinction".

Honours

High achieving Bachelor of Music / Bachelor of Commerce students who have successfully completed all course requirements for levels 1-4 may apply to continue their fifth year of study in the Bachelor of Music (Honours) / Bachelor of Commerce program 3473. A minimum WAM of 70 is required for entry into Honours. Please refer to the Bachelor of Music (Honours) / Bachelor of Commerce program 3473 for further information.

Performance Ensembles

BMus students must take part in a required number of the performance ensembles offered by the School.

Academic Rules

To qualify for the award of the degree at Pass level, a student must:
  1. enrol in the Bachelor of Music and complete 144 UOC
  2. complete the core requirements
  3. complete the stream courses and prescribed elective requirements
  4. complete at least 36 UOC of Level 1 courses before enrolling in Level 2 courses
  5. specify their major at the time of enrolment into Level 2
  6. complete at least 36 UOC of Level 2 courses before enrolling in Level 3 courses
  7. complete at least 36 UOC of Level 3 courses before enrolling in Level 4 courses

Requirements for the Bachelor of Commerce in Dual Mode (96 UOC)

Program Structure

  1. Compulsory core courses (24 UOC)
  2. Flexible core courses (24 UOC)
  3. Major requirements (48 UOC)
  4. UNSW Business School Elective (0-12 UOC)
Compulsory core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses)
Flexible core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses). Students should choose four courses from the following list:
Major requirements 48 UOC in an approved disciplinary stream offered by the UNSW Business School, containing at least 18 UOC at level 3. (Note that the 48 UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 42 UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the core. Therefore students may need to complete another 6 UOC of UNSW Business School courses to ensure they fulfil the 96 UOC required for the BCom component of this program.

Honours

After completion of the 144 UOC including all the requirements of the Bachelor of Commerce component of this dual degree, high achieving students may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) program to undertake honours in particular business disciplines. The Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) is one year of full-time study (48 UOC) which provides students with advanced knowledge of their chosen field and develops research and communication skills. Students usually complete advanced courses/seminars and a thesis. Students interested in studying at Honours Level should refer to the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) program and plans for entry requirements.
