Program Description

The three-year Bachelor of Science and Business has been developed to provide a new generation of scientists for today’s increasingly competitive and business-aware world. This program allows students to combine a coherent stream of studies in a contemporary Science discipline with courses that provide a broad background to business and management. Students will study a range of foundation business courses that will provide exposure to several aspects of business practices, and will also have the opportunity to increase their breadth of experience using electives, and select from a limited number of higher year courses to gain a greater understanding of a feature of the commercial domain. The program has been designed for students whose passion is Science, but who also recognise that awareness of contemporary business practices can be vital in the modern workplace.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Bachelor of Science and Business has been designed to:
  1. Develop and sustain an interest in, and knowledge of, Science
  2. Provide a broad understanding of some principles of Business
  3. Enable graduates to work in the scientific industry but also have an understanding of the commercial environment in which they are employed
  4. Develop a working knowledge of scientific methods of investigation
  5. Encourage curiosity and creative imagination and an appreciation of the role of speculation in the selection and solution of problems, the construction of hypotheses, and the design of experiments
  6. Develop an appreciation of scientific criteria and a concern for objectivity and precision
  7. Develop confidence and skill in formulating problems and in treating both qualitative and quantitative data
  8. Develop the ability and disposition to think logically, to communicate clearly by written and oral means, and to read critically and with understanding
  9. Develop the ability to work successfully as part of a team
  10. Encourage graduates to apply the highest ethical standards to their professional and personal lives
  11. Promote understanding of the significance of science, technology, economics and social factors in modern society, and of the contributions they can make in improving material conditions
  12. Provide opportunities for the development of students' motivations and social maturity, and an awareness of their capabilities in relation to a choice of career which will be fruitful to themselves and to society

Program Structure

Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Science and Business must complete a minimum of 144 units of credit. These 144 units of credit are comprised of a 96 units of credit Science component (including an approved Bachelor of Science major), and a 48 units of credit Business component (including both Foundation and more advanced courses), as specified in the rules below. The Bachelor of Science and Business is only offered as a single, stand-alone program.

TOTAL OF 144 UOC
96 UoC Science Component
An approved Science major, as defined below in Rules 2 and 3
Science elective courses ('Science' courses are defined in Table 1, below)
48 UoC Business Component
24 UoC Foundation Business courses as defined below in Rule 8.
24 UoC of Business electives. These electives must be chosen from courses offered by the Australian School of Business, and the approved list of electives is defined in Rule 10, below.

Program Rules

The Academic Rules relating to the Bachelor of Science and Business are as follows:

    1. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science and Business must complete a minimum of 144 units of credit (UoC).

    2. Students must complete exactly one approved Bachelor of Science and Business major. Students need to declare their major before commencement of Stage 2 of the program. Information on how to declare a Science major can be found on the Science Student Centre website.

    3. Approved majors in the Bachelor of Science and Business are:

Anatomy Food Science Microbiology Physical Science
Biology Genetics Molecular and Cell Biology Physiology
Biotechnology Geography Neuroscience Psychology
Chemistry Marine Science Pathology Statistics
Earth Science Materials Science Pharmacology Vision Science
Ecology Mathematics Physical Oceanography

    4. In addition to the courses required for the Science major, students must take 'Science' courses so that the major plus 'Science' courses totals 96 units of credit. 'Science' courses are courses offered by the following Schools, and can be identified by the course code prefixes shown in Table 1.

Table 1: Definition of 'Science' Courses
 Aviation  AVIA
Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences  BIOS, BEES, CLIM, GEOS, IEST, MSCI,  ENVS
Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences  BABS, BIOC, BIOT, MICR
 Chemistry  CHEM
 Computer Science  COMP
 Food Science  FOOD
 Materials Science and Engineering  MATS
 Mathematics and Statistics  MATH
Medical Sciences  ANAT, NEUR, PATH, PHAR, PHSL, SOMS
 Psychology  PSYC
 Physics  PHYS
Optometry and Vision Science  OPTM, VISN
 Science Faculty  SCIF, BSSM

Majors in the Bachelor of Science and Business range from 54 to 90 units of credit, and therefore students will typically need to take 6 to 42 units of credit of additional 'Science' courses depending on the major chosen. In some majors a number of elective courses are suggested or recommended. Students should be aware that in some cases it is not possible to complete all suggested or recommended electives in a particular major and complete this program in the minimum time. Students must, therefore, choose their 'Science' electives carefully.

    5. Students must enrol in at least 30 units of credit of 'Science' courses in their first 48 units of credit of study (typically two semesters of full-time study).

    6. Students must complete at least 24 units of credit of level I Science courses throughout their program.

    7. A maximum of 72 units of credit of level I courses can be taken throughout the entire program.

    8. Students must complete the following 24 units of credit of Foundation business courses:
    9. Students must enrol in at least 6 and no more than 18 units of credit of business courses in their first 48 UoC of study (typically two semesters of full-time study).

    10. Students must complete an additional 24 units of credit of business courses from the following lists of elective courses, including at least two level III courses (courses with codes MGMT3###, STRE3###, MARK3###). While students may wish to choose all elective courses from one stream to gain greater depth, it is also possible to choose courses from multiple streams.

Honours

After successful completion of 144 units of credit and all requirements as outlined above, students may be eligible to commence an Honours year in one of the Science majors. Students will not be eligible for Honours in the Australian School of Business. Students who have not qualified for the Bachelor of Science and Business at pass level (144 UoC) cannot be considered for enrolment in Honours.

Progression to Stage 4 Honours is subject to academic performance, the academic requirements for a particular discipline, and the number of places available in the School’s Honours program. Typically students require a minimum overall WAM (weighted average mark) of 65% for entry into Honours, although due to the competitive nature of Honours the entry requirements for some Schools may be significantly higher. Where students have an overall WAM that is less than, but close to, 65% Schools may take into consideration a student’s academic performance in their major area of study when assessing the application to enter Honours. If a student’s overall WAM is 65% or better, but the performance in the major area of study is less than 65%, a School may decline to accept an application to enter Honours.

Students must have satisfied prerequisite requirements for Honours as specified by a particular School. Students contemplating Honours should check the prerequisite requirements for Honours with the relevant School as early as possible in their second year of study. Students must apply to the relevant School for admission to Honours, and admission requirements as well as the number of places per intake are determined by the Head of School or nominee.

NOTE:

From 2014 Honours in Biology, Climate Science, Earth Science, Ecology, Geography, Marine Science, Medical Science (including Anatomy, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology), and Palaeoscience will be offered through 4500 Bachelor of Science (Honours). Students seeking to enrol into Honours in one of these disciplines should refer to program 4500 Science (Honours) and the relevant plan page listed in the Handbook.

Students who wish to undertake Honours in Food Science will be required to graduate from the Bachelor of Science, and apply for admission into program 3065 Food Science (Honours) through the School of Chemical Engineering.

For 2014 only all other Science disciplines not included in program 4500 Science (Honours) will be offered through 3925 as an additional year of study.
