The School of Education, in conjunction with the School of English, Media and Performing Arts offers a four-year full-time double degree for intending specialist music educators leading to the award of Bachelor of Music Bachelor of Education (BMusBEd).
Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes The BMusBEd offers an integrated training in six major areas: Musicology, Musicianship, Music Education Studies, Performance Studies, Education Studies and Contextual Studies.
Graduates are qualified to teach classroom and instrumental/vocal music from Grade 7 to 12. To qualify for the BMusBEd at Pass level, a student must obtain at least 192 units of credit (UOC) normally taken from the six major components listed below:
Music (72 UOC)
Music Performance (36 UOC)
Music Education (36 UOC)
Education (30 UOC) Arts/Education Electives (18 UOC) A choice of courses available from the BA or BEd programs.

Entry to the program is subject to a satisfactory audition/interview and acceptable level of attainment in Year 12 studies or equivalent.
Assumed knowledge: Applicants are expected to have reached the level of at least Grade 7 AMEB Performance (or equivalent) and 2 Unit Music course 2 or 3 Unit Extension or Grade 6 AMEB Musicianship (or equivalent). Additional English Language Requirements A very high level of competence in spoken and written English is expected. It is recommended applicants have a Minimum Band 4 in HSC English Advanced, Standard English or English as a Second Language or equivalent or an overall IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and a minimum of 7.0 in reading and writing, or the equivalent.
Students may transfer from the combined degree program to a single degree program with a major in Music in the first 2 years.
After three years in the combined degree, students may transfer to the Bachelor of Arts and exit the program with a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Music and a Minor in Education. Students who elect this option should follow one of the following exit strategies: 1. Students identified at the end of Semester 1 Year 3 will be required to complete 12 uoc in General Education, 6 uoc in an upper level Music course, and the Music Capstone course. 2. Students identified at the beginning of first semester in Year 4 will be required to complete 12 uoc in General Education. The Academic Rules for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Undergraduate programs and the online enrolment facility provide students with a wide range of course choices. The online enrolment facility checks that students meet the enrolment requirements for individual courses but not that a course complies with Program Rules. Students are responsible for ensuring they are enrolling in accordance with the Academic Rules outlined above. Students should not assume that because they have enrolled in a course online that the course is automatically credited to their degree program.
