The Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Science in Advanced Mathematics (BCom/BSc (Adv Maths)) is a 5 year combined program which will meet the needs of students wanting an advanced program of study in mathematics or statistics, complemented with a strong, focused and highly regarded business course.

As part of this degree students will complete a major stream in both a selected area of mathematics or statistics, and an approved disciplinary stream within the Australian School of Business.

The BSc component includes the potential award of honours based on overall performance, and incorporates a single major and a research project. Majors are defined in table C of the Advanced Mathematics Program (3986).

With approval, students with an appropriate academic record may also enrol in an additional Honours year within the Australian School of Business.

Students are not able to take a modern language as a major stream within this degree.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The objective of the BCom is to develop students’:
  • Understanding of institutional structures and processes supporting global commerce
  • Disciplinary skills and perspectives relevant to global commerce
  • Professional competences and ethical perspectives relevant to practice in global contexts
  • Understandings of alternative ways in which knowledge can be created and effectively deployed
  • Capacities for life-long learning and the negotiation of change
The objective of the BSc (Advanced Mathematics) is to:
  • Graduate Mathematicians and Statisticians with both breadth and depth of mathematics, statistics and scientific knowledge and professional skills
  • Develop the capacity for critical thinking and independent learning
  • Provide training in the practice and management of research and instil a research ethos
  • Develop general and science-specific graduate attributes
  • Expose students to disciplines different to mathematics and statistics

Bachelor of Commerce
Students are required to complete at least 84 UOC in courses offered by the Australian School of Business, including the core courses and a major in the BCom (3502), except that the course ECON1203 is not required, being replaced by MATH2901 in the BSc component.

Students may take a maximum of 48 UOC of level I courses in Commerce but are not able to take a modern language as a major.

Bachelor of Science (Advanced Mathematics)
Students are required to complete at least 144 UOC of courses delivered by Science Schools*, including:
  • An Advanced Mathematics major from program 3986
  • A 48 UOC Honours sequence at stage 5
  • 18 to 48 UOC of thesis or project work
  • 6 UOC of Advanced Mathematics general core courses (SCIF1021)
  • 24 to 48 UOC of level I science
* Science School is defined in the UNSW Online Handbook entry for program 3970. Please note that in the Quantitative Risk major the compulsory courses ACTL2001 and ACTL3003 are counted as Science for the purposes of meeting the degree rules.

Other requirements
Students may not include more than 72 UOC of level I courses overall, except where specified in a particular program.

No student may normally commence level II science courses until 24 UOC of Level I science courses have been successfully completed, unless approved by the program authority. The same requirements apply to the commerce component of the program.

Students interested in studying at Honours Level should refer to the relevant Honours plan record for entry requirements.

Academic Rules

Rules Relating to the Bachelor of Science Component
Students who obtain a sessional WAM of 65-70 will be issued a warning that they will be transferred out of the program. Students who do not achieve a session WAM of 65 or obtain consecutive session WAMs of 65-70 will be transferred to program 3529, BCom/BSc, with either mathematics or statistics as the major , or may apply to transfer directly to either the BCom (program 3502) or the BSc (program 3970).

Rules Relating to the Bachelor of Commerce Component
Rules relating to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce or to the award of the Bachelor of Economics shall apply wherever relevant. Students are advised to consult the Academic Rules for further information.
