This four-year double degree requires the completion of a BSc, with a major in Science or Mathematics, as well as a major sequence in Education consisting of Educational Theory and Teaching Methods. In addition, students complete field experiences (teaching practice) in third year (10 days) and fourth year (40 days).
Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes Please refer to the objectives in the Bachelor of Science degree (program 3970) and contact the School of Education for Program objectives.
A) Students intending to become Science teachers, or wishing to graduate in the natural sciences (excluding Mathematics), will be required to complete:
i) An approved Major from Table A in the BSc program, 3970, corresponding to one of the HSC Science teaching disciplines - Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or Earth and Environmental Sciences (refer to specific plans). See also the Approved Majors listings below. This will include at least 42 units of credit (UOC) of upper Level (II/III) courses in a single discipline and study area, including at least 18 UOC from Level III. Study plans for these Major sequences are defined in Table A. ii) At least 12 UOC at Level I in a second science teaching discipline other than the Major iii) At least 12 UOC at Level I in either Chemistry or Physics iv) At least 6 UOC at Level I in each of the main teaching disciplines: Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences v) At least 78 UOC in Education. The normal pattern is two courses in Stage 1 (12 UOC), one course in Stage 2 (6 UOC), three courses in Stage 3 (18 UOC) which include one theory elective, introductory teaching methods and teaching experience, and 42 UOC in Stage 4, which include educational theory, practice teaching, teaching method, and professional courses vi) At least 84 UOC from Science schools vii) A maximum total of 10 Level I courses (60 UOC) viii) A total of 192 UOC. Provided all requirements for Science and Education are met, students may complete the balance by choosing courses from the Majors/Minors and Schools identified in Table A and Table B of the BSc program, 3970. Notes: (a) Upper level Physics and Chemistry courses require completion of at least 12 UOC of Level I Mathematics. Some Level 3 Physics courses require a further 6 UOC of Level II Mathematics (b) For entry to Honours (fourth year) in one of the science disciplines, at least 24 UOC need to be taken at Level III in the discipline, and approval needs to be obtained from the head of the relevant Science School. B) Students wishing to become Mathematics teachers, or graduate in Mathematics, will be required to complete: i) 60 UOC in Mathematics. These Mathematics courses must be chosen so as to fulfill the requirements for a Mathematics Major of the BSc program, 3970 (see Table A), and include the courses MATH3560 'History of Mathematics' and MATH3570 'Foundations of Calculus' ii) At least 6 UOC of computing courses, which can be taken from a variety of different schools in the university iii) 78 UOC in Education. The normal pattern is two courses in Stage 1 (12 UOC), one course in Stage 2 (6 UOC), two courses (teaching method (6 UOC) and practice teaching (6 UOC)) in Stage 3, and 48 UOC in Stage 4, which include educational theory, practice teaching, teaching method, and professional courses iv) At least 84 UOC from Science schools v) A total of 192 UOC. Provided all requirements for Mathematics and Education are met, students may complete the balance by choosing courses from the Majors/Minors and Schools identified in Table A and Table B of the BSc program, 3970. Notes: (a) All prospective Mathematics teachers need to do the BScBEd combined degree. (b) In Stage 4 there is the opportunity to do Computer Studies Method if 24 UOC of computing have been completed. Approved Majors from (program 3970) Table A*

* The list is not exhaustive but representative of our knowledge-to-date. Students are advised to seek advice from the Program Authority to ensure that their Major and Science courses meet the requirements for the BScBEd degree and are recognised as teaching disciplines by DET.
