Program Description

The five year, full-time, combined Advanced Science/Arts program enables students to complete a Study Plan in Advanced Science, in addition to a major sequence in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Students must satisfy the entry requirements to Advanced Science as well as to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

This degree program is administered by the Faculty of Science.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

On completion of this program, students will have attained a sound knowledge base in both their Advanced Science and Arts specialisations.

Program Structure

  • The total units of credit (UOC) required for completion of this program is 240.
  • A student must complete at least 144 units of credit in courses delivered by Science schools*
  • A science major as specified in Table C (Advanced Science) or Table D (High Performance Student Program)
  • 24 to 48 UOC of project or thesis work
  • 6 UOC of Level I Science other than Mathematics
  • 6 UOC of Advanced Science/Mathematics general core courses (SCIF1021)
  • A 48 UOC Honours sequence at Stage 4 of program (forming part of the major and research project or thesis work)
  • 24 to 48 UOC in Level I science courses except where specified in a particular program
  • Progression to Stages 2,3 and 4 in Advanced Science/Mathematics is subject to academic performance. A student will be required to have attained a single term weighted average mark (WAM) of 70 or higher in each prior session or they may be transferred to the 3930 (Science/Arts) program
  • At least 84 UOC in courses delivered in schools by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, incorporating a 42 UOC single major sequence in Arts (as specified in List A of the Handbook, under program 3400) and a maximum of 66 UOC drawn from any one sequence in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Only courses offered by Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (refer to List A and B in program 3400) can be counted towards the Arts component of the degree.
  • A student must complete at least 24 UOC and no more than 48 UOC in Level I Arts courses, except where specified in a particular program.
  • No student may normally commence Level II courses in the Science component until 24 Level I UOC have been successfully completed in Science, unless approved by the Program Authority
  • The same rule applies to the Arts component of the program
* Science schools are defined as the Schools of Chemistry, BABS, BEES, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics, Psychology, Physics, Optometry, Safety SCience, Computer Science and Engineering, Medical Science and the Department of Aviation.

Note

Students seeking to complete the Advanced Science component of this combined degree program would normally be expected to complete the full Stage 4 Honours sequence for the Study Plan in which they are enrolled. In practice, it may be difficult to undertake some Study Plans as part of combined degree structures and students may be restricted in the number of Advanced Science courses that they can undertake. Where these are insufficient to allow the student to complete the recommended Study Plan, students are advised to consult the relevant Head of School.
