Program Description

The Diploma in Languages requires a program of 42 units of credit in a language and related courses as approved by the School of Languages and Linguistics. It may be taken concurrently with another degree program, and offers an ideal opportunity to acquire an additional language for professional purposes.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The Diploma in Languages allows students to undertake a major from the languages and related studies offered by the School of Languages and Linguistics, without having to enrol in a full BA degree.

Languages offered are Chinese, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.

Program Structure

The basic requirements for the award of the Diploma in Languages are:

1. Over a period of at least two semesters of study, 42 units of credit in language or related courses offered within the Bachelor of Arts (program 3400) as approved by the School of Languages and Linguistics.

Academic Rules

1. To qualify for the award of the Diploma in Languages, students must complete, over a period of at least two semesters of study, 42 units of credit in language or related courses offered within the Bachelor of Arts (program 3400) as approved by the School of Languages and Linguistics. Graduates must have achieved a minimum level of competence in the relevant language equivalent to that attained by students who have completed six semesters of study in a language commencing at Introductory Level.

2. A candidate for the Diploma shall:

(i) have been awarded the Bachelor from the University of New South Wales or another tertiary institution, or

(ii) with the approval of the program authorities concerned, be enrolled concurrently within the University of New South Wales in an undergraduate program of the University of New South Wales which does not offer a major sequence in the language concerned.

Admission Requirements

To be eligibile to enrol in the Diploma program, students must already hold a tertiary degree or currently be enrolled in a degree program at UNSW.
