Program Description

The University offers a four year program leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce International. This degree program is designed for students wishing to obtain a strong, broad and highly regarded business course which includes speicfic emphasis on cross-cultural business skills, knowledge and understanding in areas of international studies and relations, and incorporates study in these areas in a major university overseas. There is broad choice available to students in each of the components of the program, providing graduates of the program a wide range of careers in business organisations, government and non-government agencies at the national and international levels. Students will complete a single or double major in the selected areas of Commerce and Economics and may complete a major in an areas of international studies or relations. With approval, students with an appropriate academic record may enrol in an additional Honours year to undertake an approved Honours degree program offered by the Faculty.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The objectives of the program are to develop:
  • understanding of institutional structures and processes supporting global commerce
  • disciplinary skills and perspectives relevant to global commerce
  • professional competencies and ethical perspectives relevant to practice in global contexts
  • undertsnading of alternative ways in which knowledge can be created and effectively deployed
  • understanding the key international studies issues and developments in global context
  • greater appreciation and sensitivity to the cultural context of knowledge and learning in global business and governance

Program Structure

The program normally consists of 192 units of credit in approved courses to be completed over a period of four academic years. The program includes core courses in commerce and economics, approved courses in the areas of international studies and the completion of the Commerce Overseas Program (COP) at an overseas institution of two sessions (48 units of credit), normally undertaken during the third and fourth years of study. To proceed on the Commerce Overseas Program students must have achieved satisfactory academic progress in their first and second years of study and must fulfil the requirements of the University's Exchange Program.

A student must enrol in a minimum of 6 units per session and will not be permitted to enrol in more than 24 units per session.

First Year Core Courses

PLUS
  • A single major option consisting of 12 courses (72 units of credit) with 8 courses in an approved area of study and a minor of 4 courses in an approved area of study, of which no more than 12 units may be Level 1 courses.

OR
  • A double major option consisting of 14 courses (84 units of credit) with 7 courses in an approved area of study and 7 courses in another area of study.

AND
  • 2 courses (12 units of credit) approved as “Studies of the Region” in the Commerce Overseas Program (while on overseas placement for two sessions). Approved courses must contain content on the country or region of COP placement, regions are Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Middle East and Oceania.
  • A minimum of 4 courses (24 units of credit) in international studies and approved areas of study.
  • 2 courses (12 units of credit) in Professional and Contextual Skills.
  • 1 course (6 units of credit) in intercultural and cross-cultural study (MGMT2102 Managing Across Cultures).
  • Electives
  • For the Honours degree a student must complete a further 48 units of credit.

Academic Rules

There is no automatic transfer between Bachelor of Comerce International and other programs offered by the Faculty. Students may apply to transfer between Programs under the Faculty transfer rules at the time of application. Students may be required to transfer the Bachelor of Commerce if the program requirements are not met.

Only students who have completed 1 year of their current program are eligible to apply to transfer to program 3538 (via UAC).

Students can only have three majors recognised by the Faculty in this degree program.

Students may not count more than 84 units of Level 1 core and elective courses towards their degree.

Students must complete the approved Overseas Study Program of 2 semesters (48uoc) as determined by the Faculty and are required to maintain minimum academic performance and comply with University policy to be eligible for this International Student Exchange.

Students are only able to choose Honours from the Faculty of Business.
